Bishop Nassan Ibrahim Turyamureeba’s son, Yassin Ibrahim, 37, was among several people killed on Sunday evening when a fuel tanker burst into flames in Kyambura trading centre, Rubirizi District, in western Uganda.

Bishop Nassan, who is senior pastor at Daystar Cathedral Mbarara, confirmed Yassin’s death Monday afternoon, urging the body of Christ to join him in prayer.

The preacher had on Sunday shared an update soon as news of the fatal accident broke – but details were scanty till a few hours ago.

Mourners took to social media to console Bishop Nassan Ibrahim. Here, one described Yassin as a man who lived fully, “prepared to die at any time.”

“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live. Suffering, failure, loneliness, sorrow, discouragement, and death will be part of your journey, but the Kingdom of God will conquer all these horrors,” one social media user stated.

According to Police authorities, it was around 4pm, at Kyambura Trading centre, in Rubirizi District, when a tanker truck carrying fuel from Mbarara, lost control and rammed into two commuter taxis and a saloon car, and exploded in flames, killing several people instantly.

Three smaller secondary explosions from the parked vehicles followed.

The stream of liquid fire from the fuel also burnt about 25 small shops over a stretch of over 30 metres. The firefighting teams from Bushenyi and Kasese responded and prevented the fire from spreading further. The four motor vehicles were severely burnt and damaged.
