Rev. Canon Patrick Wakula has been elected as the 1st Anglican Bishop of Central Busoga Diocese.

Through a press statement released Wednesday, the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda say that Rev. Canon Patrick Wakula will be consecrated and enthroned as Bishop on 13th November 2016 at All Saints’ Pro-Cathedral, Iganga.

It has been after a series of meetings that the clerics came to this conclusion.

The House of Bishops approved the creation of a new diocese for Busoga region at Namirembe Cathedral and gave way to operations of Central Busoga Diocese last year.

According to Busoga Diocesan chancellor Prof. David Justin Bakibinga, the college had to convene after six month to nominate two Bishops that would be presented to the house of Bishops during the proceeding August meeting.

On July 31, 2015, the House of Bishops had a meeting at Lweza Theological College, where they were expected to elect two bishops of Busoga and Central Busoga dioceses, they only elected one, Paul Moses Samson Naimanhye for Busoga.

The next month on August 4, citing a technicality in the first process, the provincial secretary, Rev Canon Amos Magezi, working on orders of Archbishop Stanley Ntagali, wrote to Prof David Justin Bakibinga instructing him to repeat nominations for Central Busoga diocese.

When nominations were repeated, the House of Bishops further again didn’t come to conclusion concerning who would be bishop during their special meeting on the sidelines of the clergy conference that was held between August 24 and 28 August at Uganda Christian University, Mukono.

The retiring bishop of Busoga diocese then told the key stakeholders in Central Busoga diocese that covers the current political districts of Iganga, Namutumba, Kaliro and Luuka that the election of their bishop would be handled by his successor.

Newly elected Bishop Canon Wakula currently serves as the Archdeacon of Jinja Archdeaconry and Vicar of St. James Parish, Jinja, in Busoga Diocese.

Previously, he served as Archdeacon of Kaliro Archdeaoncry and Vicar of Mbulamuti Parish, Kamuli Archdeaconry. He was ordained a deacon in 1995 and a priest in 1997 in Busoga Diocese.
