Omoro County Member of Parliament, Hon Jacob Oulanyah who was recently elected the Speaker of the 11th Parliament, says he will ensure that the laws enacted during his term of office do not contradict Christian Biblical teachings or the Word of God.

He was speaking during the annual celebrations held at Namugongo, a township located northeast of the central business district Kampala, to commemorate Martyrs Day.

Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah told the congregation that the 11th Parliament is “dedicated to serving God.”

“The 11th Parliament is a Parliament dedicated to God and we will serve God. He is the lawgiver and all laws must answer that greater law given by God. We shall ensure that,” he said.

This years celebrations at both the Anglican and Catholic shrines were attended by a limited number of people due to prevailing policies by government to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Oulanyah was in the company of Hon Hellen Adoa (Woman Mp Serere District), Hon Hellen Grace Asamo, the eastern region’s Member of Parliament for People with Disabilities (PWDs), Hon Allan Sebunya Mayanja (MP, Nakaseke Central), and Hon. Christine Alupo, all of whom received a blessing from Rt. Rev. Dr Steven Kazimba Mugalu, 9th Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

“As we go home we must all feel challenged, that so many people before sacrificed so much and all they ask from us these days is so little that we should do, and even do more than what we’re asked of,” Hon Oulanyah said. “As Christians of today our jobs have been much lessened. Nobody has challenged us to the point of asking “Can you die for your faith?” If that opportunity was given to any of us, this place would be vacant.”

Gov’t to build Muslim Martyrs Shrine

In his message delivered by Mr John Mitala, the Head of Public and Secretary to Cabinet at Anglican Martyrs’ shrine in Namugongo, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni said that government will set up a Muslim Martyrs site at Namugongo to honour the 12 Muslim Martyrs who died at the site.

“I wish to highlight what I shared with Muslim brothers when I hosted them during the end of Ramadan this year. Since they are not able to celebrate the heroic act of faith of their Muslim Martyrs, government is going to work with them to establish a Muslim Martyrs site at Namugongo,” said Mitala.
