A Uganda People Defense Forces-UPDF Helicopter on Friday flew the body of Mama Mary Luwum to Kitgum District, northern Uganda.

Mama Luwum died on August 6 aged 93 in Kampala after a battle with cancer.

Reports show that the deceased, who was an orphan living with a relative in Mican in Kitgum district, met her future husband Archbishop Janani Luwum when he was a primary school teacher at Kitgum Primary School in 1947.

The Helicopter touched down at Kitgum District Farm Institute Play Grounds, Kitgum Municipality at exactly 3:29 pm, and the remains were received by the Kitgum Diocese Bishop Rev Wilson Kitara.

Others present were officials from Irene Gleeson Foundation, former Northern Uganda Diocese Bishop Benon Ogwal Abwang, Kitgum Woman MP Beatrice Anywar and Luwum’s children led by Ben Luwum among others.

The body was then taken to All Saints Cathedral in Kitgum for prayers which will be led by Rev Kitara. She will be buried on Saturday at the Cathedral, where her late husband was laid to rest.

Janani Luwum, one of the most influential leaders of the modern church in Africa, was assassinated on February 16, 1977, on orders of former President Idi Amin Dada.
