‘Way Maker’ reaches top spot in ‘Christian Copyright Licensing International’

Ranking is based on the frequency that a given song is used in church worship.

Uganda Christian News has learnt that popular contemporary worship song “Way Maker” that has led millions closer to God, reached the top spot in Christian Copyright Licensing International Top 100 songs.

God TV reported on Friday that this ranking is based on the frequency that a particular song is used in church worship.

“Way Maker” is an original song by the Nigerian gospel singer Sinach.

According to a report from Rhythm 93.7 FM, it is the second most viewed Nigerian music video on YouTube. It has reached over 100 million views since March 2019. Also, Sinach is the first gospel singer in Nigeria to accomplish such a feat.

Covered By Christian Artists Across The Globe

The worship song has been covered by several well-known Christian artists and worship leaders across the globe. These include Michael W. Smith, Leeland, Darlene Zschech, Christafari, Passion Worship Band, and Bethel Music.

Amazingly, the same song topped the Billboard Hot Christian Songs.

In April this year, Leeland’s “Way Maker” rendition ranked 9th, and Michael’s on the third spot. Also, Mandisa’s version ranked 38th in the chart and Passion ranked 39th on that same week.

In an interview with Billboard, Michael W. Smith said that he was inspired to do the cover after his daughter Anna talked about how it was her go-to song.

On 1 February 2020, Smith released his version featuring Campagna and Madelyn Berry. In March, the song marked Smith’s first time in 16 years that he has reached a Billboard top 10 chart with a non-holiday single.

In October 2019, on invitation from Joel Osteen, Sinach visited Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas where she performed the song live.

On 27 February 2020, worship leader Darlene Zschech recorded a rendition of “Way Maker” with William McDowell and a choir for an upcoming album for Integrity Music. Their video was posted in June.

What’s more, is that the song reached the top spot in the Christian Copyright Licensing International Top 100 songs in June 2020!

Today, the song continues to touch the world. Wikipedia reports that “It has been sung in churches around the world.” And it has been translated into 50 languages as well.

“It didn’t matter what the demographics of the people were or what denomination the church was. Every time we sang “Waymaker”, everyone would latch onto it too. It was something very special,” Leeland said about the song.

“Way Maker” was also sung at the George Floyd protests in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
