The African passport has finally been launched.

Outgoing Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr Dlamini-Zuma issued the first two copies to Chadian president, Idris Deby Itno and Rwandan president Paul Kagame.

All this took place at the 27th African Union (AU) summit in the Rwandan capital, Kigali yesterday.

From the meeting, it is expected that Heads of state, Ministers of foreign affairs and Ambassadors will be the first beneficiaries of the African passports.

The launch was symbolic, according to outgoing African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma , even though the initial plan was to issue the passports to listed top diplomats, AU has granted calls from many who want to share the privilege of holding African passports.

AU was today expected is expected to choose a new Chairperson to run the affairs of the Commission for the next four years.

Incoming media reports do indicate that all candidates vying for Chairperson African Union Commission have been eliminated and elections suspended after none of them garnered the 2/3 majority.

This includes Uganda’s Specioza Kazibwe.

Sources state that she reportedly polled 11 votes against 16 scored by Botswana’s Pelomi Venson-Moitoi and Equatorial Guinea candidate Agapito Mba Mokuy, who garnered 12 votes.
