UG Christian News has learnt that four people were killed and several reported missing when a mudslide hit the mountainous district of Sironko on Monday.

This report comes a day after a landslide destroyed three villages in Bududa district including Marobo, Shikhuyu in Buluchecke Sub-county and Nabutsasi in Bumayoka Sub-county.

Experts have attributed this historic recurrence to deforestation as residents seek to maximize land for cultivation,

In a statement to press, Sironko Officials feared that more lives might have been lost. Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Mr Suwedi said ten have gone missing since the tragedy.

“We have had a serious landslide in Sironko District which has killed unidentified number of people while others still missing. We have reports that others are displaced,” Sironko Resident District Commissioner, Mr Moses Wamoto Kigai told Daily Monitor.

No report has yet surfaced of response groups aside volunteers who have gone to the area to assess the extent of damage in Bududa.

Bududa district Deputy Speaker Aidah Mukuwa told Daily Monitor up to 200 people are affected and property worth millions of shillings destroyed.
