As coronavirus cases spike worldwide, the Deaf Bible Society  has embarked on live streaming prayer services in sign language in order to reach out to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

This development comes weeks after officials in several countries, including Uganda, ordered closure of all places of worship in an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus .

Majority switched entirely to digital platforms to conduct services, however only a few integrated sign language interpreters or other technics to cater specifically for the deaf.

“Physical distancing may keep us apart, but connecting with a church body online grows us closer to Christ. Our online church resources are here to help you get connected,” Deaf Bible Society said, announcing the deaf-led and interpreted church services.

Deaf Bible Society already offers the Deaf Bible app and Deaf.Bible online, along with making Jesus Films available that have been dubbed into sign languages.

But they want to expand the types of digital Christian programming they can make available to deaf believers.

Reports show that one out of every 10 people has a hearing loss. That means one out of 10 people, and probably even more in a community with a large population, isn’t hearing and understanding the message being relayed in a church service.
