How to get up when you’ve been knocked down

Getting knocked down in its self is not the biggest tragedy but staying down is.

For a just man falls seven times and rises up again…” – Proverbs 24:16

Any time you get to pursue a goal, what you truly desire is a straight road to walk on towards your destination, but many are times it doesn’t happen that way. Let’s talk about the times you end up encountering bumps and unexpected bends.

It can sometimes fill like the end of the world when you encounter obstacles that are hard to maneuver and for the majority, the easiest way out is to give up. Since quitting every time it gets hard does not guarantee us the best in life, developing resilience is key. Getting knocked down in its self is not the biggest tragedy but staying down is.

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill

To be honest, nobody goes through life without any challenges but what separates winners from losers is that winners refuse to stay down. It’s okay to mourn, but don’t stay long mourning because then you could miss the new door that is opening.

Personally, for the times I got knocked down, praying to God for the outcome I truly wanted, is what got me on my feet again. I have had a number of knockouts so far. One of them was when I was trying to register my company’s name with Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URBS).

First I was hijacked at the entrance by police officers and I was handed over to people I was told were aides and can help me with the process. I paid the 200,000UGX that was required of me to complete the process, more than a month later I still didn’t receive the incorporation certificate and I was being asked to pay another amount twice than the initial fee. Since I didn’t have that much then, I decided to put off this whole process until a year later when I decided to try one more time. This time I decided I won’t go through aides, rather I went to the front office myself, picked the necessary forms and within a month, paying just a third of what I had been asked for earlier, I had my incorporation certificate! It took resilience

Resilience is a quality that is very necessary for winning in life and it can be developed. Below are some of the habits you can exercise to develop resilience

  1. Get a vision for your life. Any time you get down, being reminded of the outcome you want out of life will help you get up and try one more time. In Habakkuk 2:2 , God insists that whoever has a plain (clear) vision will run when they read (see) it
  2. Anytime you get down, spend more time deciding your next course of action rather than lamenting how bad it was
  3. Pray for the future that you truly desire, after all the years you have left matter more than the ones you’ve lost.

Remember, faith moves mountains, believe that you can make it and there will be no obstacle to stop you.

In my Book “You are great too” I elaborate further on this topic, describing a strong biblical figure who perfectly demonstrated resilience
