Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca A. Kadaga has responded to calls for re-opening places of worship in Uganda.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the 64-year-old stated that places of worship such as Churches and Mosques can operate safely when given the standard operating procedures.

“This is actually possible,” she said.

According to her, prayer services were in June successfully held at the Catholic and Anglican Martyrs Shrines with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in place when the nation went into lockdown.

Supporting her statement furthermore, the Speaker noted that the Archbishop of Mbarara was installed with similar SOPs in place.

“The Church has spoken to me on this issue to ask that government considers facilitating the churches, mosques and other places of worship with standard operating procedures. I hope that the Prime Minister will come and update Parliament on this matter,” she said.
