President Yoweri Museveni has donated sh10 m towards the cost of printing the new Lusamia-Lugwe bible, commissioned after 40 years of translation.

This donation was made during celebrations to launch the new bible translation at Bishop Hannington Bible school Syamalede, in Lumino in Busia district on 6th September, 2019.

The President was represented by the State Minister for East African Community Afairs, Mr Julius Maganda.

He appealed to Christians to use the new Bible to foster unity. Mr Museveni commended retired principle Judge James Manange Ogoola , the Chairperson launching committee, for his efforts to ensure that the Bible is translated into Lusamia-Lugwe.

“We have been in 40 years of a linguistic wilderness and we have gone from linguistic bondage to linguistic freedom,” Ogoola said.

Justice Ogoola told media reporters although foreign languages  had served the Basamia-Bagwe for 150 years, it was now time for them to embrace their own language.

The event was graced by Pentecostals, Anglicans, Catholics, Orthodox and officials from the Bible societies of Uganda and Kenya.

They included Mr Simon Peter Mukhama, General Secretary and CEO of the Bible Society of Uganda, Bishop Samuel Egesa of Bukedi Diocese who commended the government for “allowing freedom of worship, without which the Uganda Bible Society would not be in position to translate bibles.”

Other clergy included Bishop Olwa of Lango Diocese, the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Orthodox Church, Yonah Lwanga and Dr Emmanuel Obbo, the Archbishop Tororo Diocese.
