President Museveni has during a fundraising drive to enable reconstruction of a Church contributed Sh100m towards the cause.

Kitabi Catholic parish in Bushenyi district was on Thursday celebrating St Peter’s Parish day when the President handed over a cash contribution to Rev Fr Robert Kakutu, the parish priest.

This, he said, was towards the rehabilitation of the Church.

The president through his speech delivered by the Minister of General Duties, Mary Karooro Okurut urged Christians to ensure that each household is engaged in an income generating activity.

Museveni said government will procure solar pumps for irrigation in the area. This was after emphasizing that residents need to adopt better farming methods which do not destroy the environment especially wetlands.

The Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, Paul Bakyenga credited the church for producing people of high integrity.

Rev Fr Robert Kakutu while thanking the president said a total of 240m in cash and pledges was collected during this celebation.

“About sh311 has so far been spent on the projects and sh 800m is needed to complete it.” Fr Robert Kakutu added.

No longer a burden? President Museveni recently, as reported by Daily Monitor, asked churches and mosques to stop bothering him into making financial contributions to their projects, saying it is not mandatory of him.

He added that contributing towards such projects was not part of government programmes.

The President was speaking at the consecration of the Ibanda District Khadi Yusuf Kalule and inauguration of Muslim District Council at Rugarama where he donated a car to the sheikh.

“Making contribution has become like a debt. It is not government’s role to build places of worship. It is not mandatory (for government) to contribute,” he is quoted to have said.

As the newspaper stipulated, the President said he never saw former President Milton Obote give cars to bishops and sheikhs, adding that churches want him to contribute because he is close to them.
