Popular shopkeeper Asad Shah was stabbed and then had his head stamped on outside his shop in Glasgow, Scotland.

It came just hours after the 40-year-old posted a message on Facebook wishing “a very happy Easter to my beloved Christian nation”.

Paramedics fought to save Mr Shah’s life and the Pakistani-born man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he later died.

A 32-year-old man was later arrested and charged with murder after the death of shopkeeper Mr Shah.

Police Scotland said the death is being treated as “religiously prejudiced” and confirmed the accused was also Muslim.

The news of the well-loved’s shopkeeper’s death shocked local residents who described him as a “pillar of the community”.

He planned to host a Google hangout today with church-going friends about the significance of Good Friday.

In previous Facebook posts, Mr Shah urged people to reject violence and hatred in favour of “unconditional real love for all mankind”.
