“I call upon you the people of Kasese and the country at large to pray for the embattled FDC presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, because he has suffered enough,” said Ms Justine Muhindo, the Kasese Deputy Resident District Commissioner, during a two-day workshop on human rights organised by Rwenzori Peace Bridge of Reconciliation (RPBR), in Kasese District this week.

The organisation (RPBR) has been engaged in various activities within the Rwenzori region that are aimed at fostering peace, community conflict resolution, address past violations and community grievances through national and local structures.

Her plea has come in at a time when the chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Mr Medi Kaggwa, is condemning the brutal arrest of Dr Besigye, calling  for a fair and speedy trial of the Opposition leader.

Kizza Besigye is currently in Luzira prison on treason charges, where the government is accusing him of declaring himself the president of Uganda.

These charges attract a maximum death penalty on conviction.

He, on Wednesday appeared before Nakawa Court after his file was transferred from Moroto Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

This was a day after the locals in Moroto stormed the prison demanding that their ‘president’ should be released.

Dr Besigye is expected in court on the 25th of May, 2016 to answer the charges .
