Residents of Kirinyabigo and Kawanda villages, in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District are set to hold prayers in memory of the late Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga, an online news daily has reported.

Former Councilor Kawanda ward and community mobilizer, Casmoto Mutebi told ChimpReports they are organizing prayers, which will be conducted in Kaayi village at the very spot Abiriga was assassinated.

Mutebi explained that the occasion – likely to draw even residents of the Christian faith – will be preceded from Kawanda trading center and end at the point where prayers will be held.

“This is going to be a peaceful event for all residents as we remember the late Abiriga who has been a friend to us all in the area including children and youth,” Mutebi is quoted as saying.

When the online news outlet asked if the event had been cleared by the Police as provided for in the Public Order and Management Act, Mutebi said that they informed Police and still await response.

“We have not cleared the event, although we can’t stop them from praying,” Police authorities said when contacted.

Six days ago, the Electoral Commission (EC) released a roadmap to replacing MP Abiriga. In this, they said nominations will be conducted between July 19 and July 20 at Arua District headquarters.

“This will be followed by a five-day period where the public will access the candidates’ nomination papers and will be able to lodge complaints, if any, on suitability of the candidates to contest in the by-election,” Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the EC Chairman said.

Abiriga was gunned down together with his body guard who was also his younger brother by unknown assassins on June 8, 2018. The legislator was approaching his home in Kawanda, about 300 metres away.
