Based on social media activities of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgenders (LGBT) in the country, it appears that a gay pride parade scheduled for this Saturday in Kampala will go ahead as planned despite threats from ethics and integrity minister Rev. Fr. Simon Lokodo.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Simon Lokodo said that police will arrest the organizers of these festivities “aimed at promotion, exhibition and recruiting people to join this LGBT movement”, urging that it is against the law; specifically the Penal Code, which is built on precedents, set in many other countries.

“In our society, our African values and cultures consider sexual activity to be private and personal, and it is not conducted in public. Certainly, neither is homosexuality. It is for this reason that the promotion of ‘gay’ activities is unwelcome.” Fr Lokodo’s statement read.

He further said that the Gay Pride Match is illegal as they have not been cleared by the Uganda Police Force.

He called upon all stakeholders, Ministries, Departments, Local Governments and other agencies of Government, Faith Based Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and the Media fraternity to join Government to curb the escalating levels of immorality by upholding and integrating the National Ethical values of Uganda into their daily life and work.

Seemingly undeterred by the prospect of arrest, Ugandan LGBT activists took to social media sharing their determination to celebrate pride on Saturday the 24th.

“I am calling on my fellow members of the committee to come for the match. Whatever happens, we shall see when its time to cross the bridge. Nothing personal with Lokodo . For how long shall we back down because they intimidate us? We won’t be intimidated,” said Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera, a Uganda Feminist and LGBT activist.
