USA: ‘Way Maker’ gets multiple Dove Award nominations including ‘Song of the Year’

Way Maker, the critically-acclaimed song written by award-winning worship leader Osinachi Joseph popularly known as Sinach has been nominated in three categories – including ‘Song of the Year’ – of the Dove Awards 2020 in the United States.

The Gospel Music Association announced on Thursday the nominations for this year’s show, which will be aired on Trinity Broadcasting Network on Oct. 30.

The other categories Way Maker is vying for include Spanish Language Recorded Song of the Year (as recorded by Priscilla Bueno), and Worship Recorded Song of the Year (as recorded by Leeland).

The land mark achievement comes months since this single reached the top spot in Christian Copyright Licensing International Top 100 songs.

Organised by the Gospel Music Association (GMA) of the United States, the Dove Awards is deemed among the biggest gospel music awards in the world. The Song of the Year Category is the biggest accolade and is awarded to a songwriter and the publisher every year.

“This nomination could only have come through the Spirit of God and not man,” Sinach said in an update on social media.

“As I have said before, this song was born from the Spirit and it is soaring on the wings of the Holy Ghost. It is a song for the now. I am grateful to everyone who has supported us, the churches, the ministers who have taken this song to the ends of the earth, and the many people it continues to be a blessing to,” she added.

Way Maker’s nomination is arguably the first time ever a song written by a Nigerian gospel artist is making the top category, reports show.

Lauren Daigle received four nominations including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year (Artist), and Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year for her platinum-selling single, “Rescue.”

Kanye West, who is running as an independent presidential candidate, according to US. media reports, earned three nominations stemming from his album “Jesus Is King,” including rap/hip hop album of the year, traditional gospel album of the year and rap/hip hop recorded song of the year for “Follow God.”

Christian artist Zach Williams and for King & Country are the leading artist nominees at this year’s Dove Awards.

Other nominated artists include Hillsong Worship, Kirk Franklin and Jonathan McReynolds, who all have four nominations each as artists. Travis Greene, Jekalyn Carr, Casting Crowns, Matthew West, Jeremy Camp, Gaither Vocal Band and Tasha Cobbs Leonard are also nominated for this year’s event.
