Re-appointed head of Uganda Media Centre (UMC), Ofwono Opondo, has said that Dr Kizza Besigye’s statement to government on re-opening Makerere University in 10 days is nothing but an empty threat.

“We shall see if you win the ultimatum on Open Makerere, empty threat just!” Ofwono Opondo said on Thursday, responding to a tweet Dr Kizza Besigye posted reading ‘Re-open Makerere Now, 8 days to go.’

While at his home in Kasangati on Tuesday, Besigye told media about the widespread ‘discontentment’ towards the continued indefinite closure of Makerere University.

“Parents, students and Ugandans cannot continue to be subjected to unnecessary suffering because of this illegitimate regime of Museveni. Our students can’t wait as the committee consumes our money.” He said.

The lead opposition leader then gave government 10 days to re-open Makerere University or else he will mobilize national protests against its closure.

“As FDC we shall keep on reminding the government the remaining days and when they are all done without reopening of the university then we shall call for a nationwide protest,” Dr Besigye said, in the company of several senior opposition figures.
