Independent Magazine proprietor Andrew Mwenda has said Pope Francis is the only true Christian that he now knows.

To stress his point further, Andrew says Pope Francis, the 266th current Roman Catholic Church overseer is one of the leaders he would die for.

The famous political commentator made this statement Monday, following Pope Francis’ meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Pope Francis on Monday asked for “God’s forgiveness” for the “sins and failings” of the Roman Catholic Church at the time of the Rwandan genocide, and told Rwanda’s president that he hoped his apology would help the country heal.

Mr Kagame described Pope’s comment as a great moment and a new chapter in relations between his country and the Vatican.

“Today President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeanette met with Pope Francis. The pope apologized for the role of the Catholic Church in the Rwanda genocide. When I read this story, tears just rolled down my eyes.” Muwenda said.

Adding: “This is the greatest pope the world has produced. He is the only true Christian I now know. He is one of the leaders I would die for.”

In November, the government in Kigali requested an apology from the Vatican for the role that some Catholic priests and religious figures played in the massacres of ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

Dozens of Catholic priests are believed to have been complicit in the killings of some 800,000 people by Hutu extremists in 1994.

Several massacres were carried out in churches where people sought sanctuary.
