In the 1990’s, Watoto Church expanded its ministry to include radio broadcasting with a drive to spread God’s love and re-shaping the future of Christian entertainment.

104.1 Power FM has over the years trained some of the best media personalities known in Uganda today, on top of providing a range of relevant, informative and spirit-filled Christian content to help listeners place faith at the heart of daily life.

In order to impact the next generation, 104.1 Power FM recently announced a radio apprentice initiative aimed at producing well trained and groomed radio presenters. The project is an addition to their annual training program for gospel artistes, Power FM Presents.

“We realized the need to mentor potential candidates for radio in an era where presenters seem to be re-cycled from one station to another and young people are not being mentored to take over from those that have been in the industry for a long time,” the station management told Uganda Christian News during an exclusive interview.

The Radio Apprentice presenter campaign was launched on 31st December 2019 just before midnight as a competition set to run through the month of January 2020.

“We advertised both on air and online urging listeners to send in recordings. (send 1 minute recorded voice clip to a specified phone number). We got 300 applicants and short listed 23,” the management added.

Every week for 5 weeks, Power 104.1 FM has been eliminating 3 contestants depending on their performance in the weekly assigned tasks as well as online response to their videos.

“We were down to 5 contestants. During the semi – finalist session we eliminated 2 contestants. That brought us down to our 3 finalists left in the competition,” the station said.

For the grand finale set for 21st February, 2020 at Light House Television studios Naguru – Kampala, Power FM will have the remaining 3 contestants (Leila Kebirungi, Jamie Catalina and Laura Grace) perform specific tasks before a panel of Judges and a studio audience that bought fairly priced tickets to witness the event.

A few areas to be tested include: Co-hosting dynamics, Interview skills, Humor on radio.

“In preparation for the grand finale, our finalists have been assigned mentors from within the Power FM team. They were coached to get them ready for the tasks to be performed before a studio audience,” the management said.

“The finalist with the highest score will be named Power FM Radio apprentice and earn an opportunity to be trained and mentored by some of the most accomplished personalities in the local radio industry,” they continued. “In recognition of the potential of some of the previously eliminated candidates, the top 5 finalists of this competition will also be offered the opportunity to receive comprehensive training in order to identify their specific skill sets and receive direction.”
